Can't I just feed my chickens cracked corn?

A: This has been a question that we’ve received a lot lately. We recommend viewing cracked corn as a treat for chickens. Whole corn is even harder to digest and some hens may not eat it if they are used to a more digestible layer feed.

Think of treats and snacks for chickens like candy for kids. If offered a complete meal or a bowl of M&Ms, many kids would choose the M&Ms - but they'd then be lacking on essential nutrients.

To provide the necessary nutrients for egg-laying, we make it a goal on our farm to provide 90 percent of the diet through a complete layer feed and then offering treats and snacks sparingly.
