LOL... i have the same problem but my husband fix it by not letting me go in to the feed stores:idunno, he goes and gets all my chicken supplies because he knows if i go in there i come back out with 4 to 5 new chicks

...lol and i avoid craigs list too

. Its hard because they are so cute but u also have to think if u have enough resources to take care of all of them, as long as u do a couple more wont hurt

. I have two silkie broodies on eggs now so that keeps me busy and away from feed stores.

I have 18 1/2 (I think) chickens and 3 guineas. (The 1/2 is my banty) I REALLY, REALLY want to get 2 Norwegian Jaerhon pullets. The Hubby won't go for it. Maybe next year ....

About the time you have to butcher or rehome all the roosters it will hit you. Or when you buy started chickens and they bring in disease to your entire flock.

Not being harsh or mean, just trying to give you the realistic perspective! I've had chickens for 20 years and at first I wanted more and more- then I started learning more and realized I was happier with a smaller flock of about 20, rather than 50.

Just say NEXT YEAR!

I just ordered 12 more from Ideal Poultry this morning!!!!

My excuse is that I have had several die, all for different reasons, had one rooster that I had to rehome and just realized that I have another rooster. This only left me with 10 pullets.........Sooooooooo, I needed more!!!!!!!! I mentioned all of this to my hubby the other night and he said "Then get some." I jumped right on that!!

I also like to have lots of different breeds. This time, I ordered Speckled Sussex, Partridge Rock, Salmon Faverolle, Golden Lace Wyandotte, Barred Cochin and then several just for layers (Black Sex Link, Leghorn and Production Red).

Already, I have Barred rocks, Silver Laced Wyandottes, a Buff Orp, RIR, 3 EE's, a Polish. It's the best hobby I have ever had!!!!!!

Was there life before we owned chickens??

I love that there are others out there with the chicken fever! I started with 6 from the feed store, just regular brown and white...down to 4 after a weasel attack a couple of months ago, now I want MORE! My coop would hold 10-12 and I am trying to talk hubby into a 2nd coop! Love my girls!

Honestly, I want them all. But, realistically, I have a nice setup for 10 birds and no desire to crowd them. So, until I am down to 7 or convince the hubby of a need to build a second coop, no chicks for me. I guess I'm not an impulsive person.

I too have chicken fever but I also know exactly what ranchhand is talking about. I started out with 6 from a neighbor and then got 20 from Ideal Poultry. I found some that I really wanted from some people close to me. Well guess what? They had a respiratory disease and now my little flock is infected and my favorite pullet died as well as two of the new birds and two more of my original flock are sick. My boyfriend put down the two new silkies I got because I'm pretty sure they're the ones that started it.

So now I'm contemplating what to do with my infected flock because they can carry the disease for life even without showing symptoms.

But I've also just ordered 50 new chicks from Ideal Poultry. The old chickens will be kept completely seperate or even sold/culled and these will be my new flock.

The good thing about starting out with a wide variety is that you can see which chickens you actually do like the most. I had several different breeds but I've narrowed it down to four breeds plus a few ducks and a small flock of random mixed/variety chickens in a seperate pen. Each breed will be seperated.

Boyfriend knows I ordered new chicks but I don't think he realizes how many I've ordered.

Same here! I'm not over my limit YET but I keep wanting all these breeds! WHO ever decided to keep making new breeds of chickens! It would be SO much easier on us chicken ppl if there were only 4 or 5 breeds to choose from
