Can't Stop Buying Chicks!!!!

Try not living in a neighborhood, but in the country rated AG.

Chickens all over the place, ducks, geese, rabbits, quail, goats, dogs, cats. Yep that's us

aside from our Easter Eggers (multitude of feather colors) all the pure bred chickens will be of blue and lavender feather coloring here.

Yeah me too. I ordered 8, only sent me 7 so I ordered 3 more 1 ended up being a rooster, bought 4 more one died, another died from impacted crop and I didn't realize until it was too late....first time chicken owner. I bought 15 hatching eggs 1 hatched, wasn't good enough so I bought 42 more hatching eggs. 27 are moving in the shells. But in all honesty I have a coop that will hold up to 16 chcikens and another that will hold about 6-8. So we will see what happens after the eggs hatch. Depending on how many and how many are cockerals I will need to rehome some. I'm done after this at least until next spring.

More chicks=more food=more poop=more work...there

I know how you feel and it's hard, but keep in mind that those newbies aren't going to be welcomed by those who are already established in an existing flock, unless they are all very young. Plus, why risk the increased chance of cannibalistic behavior and other behavioral problems as a result of not enough space? Just things to think about before going on a chick-spree.

Forgot to add: More chicks from different sources GREATLY increases your chance of disease. If you get more chicks they will need to be quarantined for at least a month, and even then there's a possibility they could give something to your other chicks. I had that happen this season, got chicks from a variety of places and now my whole flock is infected with CRD. I've been managing it, but it's just a bummer that I didn't just pass and get all the chicks I wanted at once, from one location.

I was doing ok with the chickens I had, but then I got into incubating, but still ok, then we had two dogs attack our flock and kill our only Buckeye, so we of course had to replace her, but we didn't want to incubate and bought 16 Buckeye chicks....so yeah, we're over our limit now...even butchering the extra roosters won't help! LOL!

DH and I really enjoy the chickens. THey are much more fun than we realized. The kids love them , too! I had bought our first 25 to be egg layers. well they have truly pulled me right into the chicken world. But not every bird appeals to me, thank goodness.

I am careful about the source and don't buy from just anyone. I do look for NPIP and ask health questions. Better to NOT bring in disease. When I went to a big poultry show, I came home and dropped all my clothes and sneakers in the wash pronto.

Have been learning how to incubate. 14/24 on first try. BUild an incubator and it's going thru its first trial run. Yup, lots of chickens around here.

I had it baaad, here in NH you have to buy twelve chicks or none.

So imagine every time I saw one chicky I wanted, I had to get 11 more just to get the one I wanted!

Resulted in me having 20-30 birds, and a few shared feed store orders.

Chicks are fun, but now that my girls and boys are all older I am over the chick craze for now, it changed into me being obsessed with upgrading my chicken coop for the big girls!

Our main coop can hold 32 at the 4 sq ft per bird rule. Another building could hold 100, but I use it as a brooder house for new hatchlings. Then there are the outdoor brooders, grow out pens, pasture, flight pen.

I guess I'm the only one who dreads the idea of getting more chicks. They're cute but I want eggs NOW. I did my waiting with the first batch. If it weren't for the fear of wiping out my whole flock or trying to figure out where to quarantine the new ones, I'd let someone else do all the work.
