True story!

I reaaaaallly wanted some more as I have 10 layers and one roo. I kept wrestling with "WHERE would I house more chicks if I get them in the spring and they have to get pretty big before integrating?" and "what kind of mess will this pecking order cause when integrating?" and "will hubby make me sleep in the coop if I order more" THEN: Ms. Margret decided to go broody! I jammed 9 eggs under her and she has been on that nest 3 days. I kinda debated if I should let her set because it is really pretty hot to be stuck in a nest box but Im keeping a close eye on her. This will eliminate the separate housing til they are big issue, disease potential and greatly reduce the pecking order ordeal since they will be raised with the flock. Im so excited I can hardly stand it. Margret is a Marans that hatched Feb 4th of this year. I hope we can make this happen! Oh yeah...and hubby cant fight with nature right? I did NOT go buy more birds! My coop will be perfect for 20!

Egg Rookie, I like the way you think!

I did it...I just ordered more chicks...2 Australorp, 2 Barred Plymouth Rock, 2 Dark Brahmas, 2 Ameraucanas, 2 Speckled Sussex and 2 Golden Laced Wyandotte! I can't wait!!! Now just hoping "we" all get along!

My DH has definitely decided I have gone Chicken Crazy! Good thing he loves me, 19 years of marriage today!

Ya - I was definitely getting 3 little peeps - laying hens - that's it. Well...then I saw the buff Cochin banty and the (?) cute other little banty and they had tiny feathered legs and feet....but two bantums is like 1 more standard - right? Sure! Coop needs to be a bit larger, but - hey...no problem. While reading everything that I possibly can about chickens and chicken care, well, it was only natural that I look at the pics available - right? Learning about breeds right? Okay - so I find a gal who breeds silkies only 15 min. from me! I knew that I was prepared to fall in love with the 8 week old splash silkies that I went to see. That woman did an awful thing! She let me see the 3 day old silkie hatchlings! Then I held them! ...came home with 4 silkies.
My "big kids" are in their own little coop for the moment. The original 5 are in their little coop. The tinies are in their box - nice and snuggie. I carry all 9 to the excercise pen twice a day. They go together with with the bunnies for socializing and stretching - I carry the bunnies there too. My arms and hands are scraped from wire, I need new wire cutters and will be ordering windows on line next week. My coop will be approx. 22 square feet with a pen area that is 8'X5' for when they are not in "their" part of the yard to free range. I am drawing out plans for my Serama "doll house" coop. Gonna get some!!

Every muscle I have (including the grey matter) is tired and sore........and I am thrilled!! What a wonderful world of awsome creatures (and people) I have wandered into!!
Conclusion: chickens are like potato chips and tattoos!!

Please don't take it lightly. The chicks are animals who deserve a good environment and the best care too.
Do not go over your limit without measuring the impact of the addition of more little mouths to feed!
