Can't Stop Buying Chicks!!!!

Okay, I'm addicted too! I'm lucky, my hubby has the same weakness. We started out with 15 Buff Orpingtons, then added an Orpington rooster. The female Orps didn't like the idea because we found him dead inside the pen one day with a gash in his neck. Well, we tried another, an Ameracauna rooster. Then three Buff Rocks and one Barred Rock. The rooster then killed one Buff Rock and injured another, so we ate him. The Barred Rock "flew the coop" and we still have the Buff Rock and 11 of the Orps. THEN, we ordered 27 more last spring ---- now 39 chickens. We'll eat the older 12 soon and be left with a mere 27. We've been lucky, no roosters in the new 27 and never bought any illnesses. We'll see what happens next spring --- of course we're buying more!

Tell me about it... I've had Welsumers for years and have always gotten an assortment of hatchery chicks to try. Last year discovered Wyandottes... got Blue Laced Red and love their calm temperament so much now I want all the other colors Wyandottes come in, too! I also have Black/Blue Copper Marans, and a friend just gave me some of a new breed she's working on, a dark-egger but with interesting body colors. Besides Silver Pencilled, Silver Laced, Buff, White, Partridge and Blue Wyandottes (their only color I really don't care for is Columbian), I want Buckeyes, Dominiques, and Speckled Sussex. Oh and I've already placed my turkey poult order for next spring from Porter's Heritage Turkeys.

I went crazy hatching this spring, though I did sell quite a few of the chicks, as well as culling through the yearlings. Currently I'm down to about 64 chickens and I have already put over 40 cockerels in the freezer this year :-D I'll be doing more culling before winter but I have a feeling I'm still going to have more overwintered chickens than last year!

I am sooooo glad to see that we are not the only ones. WE BOTH have the fever. I started with RIR, the added a Barred rock rooster that was mean to my grandchildren and we keep saying he is going to be a pot of dumplings if he comes at us one more time. That was 2 months and 50 charges at us ago. He does take care of the ladies. Thats the only reason we dont do him in. Now we have Eddie and his wives who are Silver laced Wyndottes, then there was Lucy and Ethel, That was before the wild ferrets got Ethel, she is a turken, and the chicks we hatched that werea all mixed and the ferrets got most of them so now all we have left of them is 3, but we have added two donkeys to keep the critters off the property. I wanted turkeys so now we have 5, and we both decided peacocks, we were only going to get 2 now we have 12, then theres the silkies I had to have and the polish crested he wanted. Now we are hatching frizzles and sizzles and more silkies. Lets not forget the 14 toy poodles that we have. Now I want some rumpless Aracanas. I just cant stop. Luckily I am not the only one in the family. And he helps or should I say builds the houses for me.

Hello Everyone!!
I am "new" to byc forum....but not new to chickens...I have had chicken fever for some time now and have really enjoyed reading your posts...you guys crack me up!! I guess because I can relate so well to the baby chick addiction...haha I have decided to just buy and enjoy them as long as I have room...they sure bring joy don't they!! My friends and I laugh about it all the time and we'd rather just add space/make space for all the new breeds than fight it anymore...we are nuts for chickens...I love the one that blamed it on the "other guys"..."why did they have to invent so many breeds"...haha we feel exactly the same way!!

We had 19 and went to the feed store and saw new babies. Told my husband we should just get 6 that will be good. WELL, I walked out with 10, 4 Americunas, 4 RIR and 2 BO. Then the owner said, "look, 2 Black Copper Marans just hatched", "you can just have these 2"!

SO, off we left with 12 new babies:rolleyes:
I don't want to be cured of this wonderful new habit!!

I love that! I have to say that I have spent more time here lately than on facebook.

I love, love, love our chickens!!! I do want more but my hubby said I can't buy any more. So, I'm hoping that some of mine will have babies of their own. If not, I may just have to add some in the spring.

Just tell him they made a mistake and accidentally doubled your order.

Did you order the pullet special? Their specials make it so hard not to order since they're so cheap cheep! 25 pullets for $1.35 each? Or bantams for $0.85 - how can one resist?
