Hi All. I know I'm a chicken addict and I excel in chicken math.
We started with 6 from TSC in March. This actually all started as a joke. I've never had chickens. The SO has. I want cute chickens. Well, our first are Red Pullets. The next are Brahmas (cute chicks with boots I say and he rolls his eyes..) then I found the chickens that I really love from a guy on here looking for a home for. Our Appenzeller's. They are about 1 year old, laying and on top of that have hats. Who could ask for anything more???
My downfall is I'm in animal rescue and once some of the shelters found out, well let's say we have many that were given yo us as they no where else to go. We rehome as we can otherwise they are fine here.
My very favorite girl is a Speckled Sussex who is the only "free range" girl we have and she has tons of personality. Well she hurt her foot and has gone off to work with mom twice (I work at a vet). While the vets I work with don't do chickens they're looking for reasons. She sits in the front office with me and has been the talk of the clinic. The other gal brings her dog and me, I take my chicken.
Yes, I'm addicted but you know when you come home from a bad day and you let a run of them out how can you not laugh and all the troubles go away?
We use tractor coops and they are large enough to hold about 15 birds per run. Works for us and you know the chickens are happy...
