Caponizing your rooster?

It depends on the rooster, I have indeed had a couple jerks too. :lau

You’re right about how many grow out of it though, sometimes it just takes a while for their testosterone to balance. However sometimes they don’t grow out if it and can be quite aggressive, it’s just a gamble I suppose. But I will say the MAJORITY tend to be sweet gentlemen!
I don't have aggressive roosters ever. I keep a few different breeds, both standard and bantam. I will often pen up young troublemakers until they mature more if necessary.

Bantam cochins are one of my favorites and I always have a few running around. They are funny little guys.

You are so lucky! I’ll be honest though, I’ve had a LOT of roosters and I’ve only had 2 that were aggressive and never grew out of it.

And yes! Bantam Cochins are so lovely, the girls have so much attitude and the boys are always just so silly! I love’ em! :love

I'd like to read the first article you read on it. The one Casport posted concluded that the aggression abated initially, but returned, often times worse than before. Just curious about this whole thing as I didn't even know that people did this!
I came across this article in the morning and I don’t even know where I saw it, but the guy was doing this to roosters and then thinking about selling them as pets. It just got me thinking and wondering? I just decided to ask people on this site what they knew on this.

I get, it, the first time a heard about it got me interested. But after some research, I found out how much I disliked the whole idea of it, especially the dangers of it.

So I’ve been thinking about this whole topic for a while.

It seems like you really want a rooster but obviously are worried about temperament ect. I think if this is something you really want, you should try a really docile breed. My first recommendation would be a silkie, but you stated how you really like the look of roosters with the long shiny hackles ect. So maybe try a bantam Cochin? I’ve had a few and they’ve all been really sweet and drop dead gorgeous!

If it doesn’t work out you could always find a new home for him where he’ll be loved!

In conclusion, I really don’t think you should try caponizing any rooster though. From what I’ve read, it seems like you really love your birds and want the best for them. So I think it would be in their best interest to not try it, like I said it’s very dangerous and can lead to further complications.

I wish you the best of luck though! Hopefully you’ll figure something out!
I can’t have a rooster because of where I live. I just think they are so beautiful! I think the main reason that most urban areas do not allow roosters is because of the crowing and this article said that it stops them from crowing. I didn’t know if that was true or not.

I agree, plus I think the whole stereotype that roosters are mean and aggressive plays into that a lot too! It’s a shame though, they can be so lovely.

I am happy that a lot more urban areas are beginning to be more backyard chicken friendly though!

I had two roosters in my life, one was extremely aggressive and had to be culled :( on the other end my current one is a Polish and he is like the opposite, he's almost scared of the hens sometimes lol

This is a very old post but I am going to reply. I caponized 14 Roos last fall and lost one. Some didn’t grow their combs and some did. One still crows and I am assuming we missed a part of one testical. They all have their beautiful feathers and one is broody right now. He is sitting on turkey and peacock eggs.
