Capturing Mute Swans?

Hi All, I'm a reporter for the NPR station on Long Island, New York.

New York is considering new regulations that would try to eliminate all mute swans in the state (this has happened in other states too). Part of NY's proposed regulations would allow for hunters to "capture" mute swans and sell them to licensed breeders.

I'm really curious if this is common? How much money can be made?

I'm originally from NY and I wanted to understand more and found an article about this that states..

The DEC plan states that mute swans are “a non-native, invasive species, brought to North America from Eurasia for ornamental purposes in the late 1800s,” and that they “can cause a variety of problems, including aggressive behavior towards people, destruction of submerged aquatic vegetation, displacement of native wildlife species, degradation of water quality, and potential hazards to aviation.”

Just some words for thought..... Many people in the united states are decentents from people that arrived in the US in the 1800s (some earlier and some later)... and from what I see, we are pretty invasive, numbering near 314 million. We have caused many problems to our environment, threatening our water supply, poisening our air, poluting our ponds, rivers and lakes. We have displaced wildlife, in some cases to extinction, with our constant building of homes and businesses.

How are we any different?
