Carb sensitivity, hypoglycemia, diabetes, or other?

Your husband probably needs to eat less and not stuff himself. And he needs to reduce simple carbs down to small amounts. I've been in the situation he's in. Still am in part.

I always had issues with hypoglycemia when I was young. Then bad diet put me into the prediabetic zone. With the years of testing my blood sugar, I did learn what not to eat and got it under control. Then the hypoglycemia issues came back. Now I also get painful heartburn from eating simple carbs.

If I eat a meal heavy in simple carbs my blood sugar skyrockets and makes me tired, then it crashes and I start shaking and can't think straight. Something small and sugary to stop the slide followed by something light with enough protien to stablize blood sugar helps best.

I have a serious issue with floury potatoes like Russets, and I love potatoes. Rice gets me. Pasta or pizza are super rare meals for me as they always cause a spike and crash and the horrible heartburn. I can't eat a whole sandwhich on whole wheat bread even. One slice of bread is about all I can handle in a day.

It is possible to get it under control. It takes doing what you need to do, though, no matter what those around you are eating.

Sounds like me. I had eaten some pancakes...LoVe my carbs.

About 2 hours later, I got really dizzy, confused and shaky. I had already purchased a tester.

My blood sugar had dropped from 110 before breakfast to 65. Scared the poo out of me. I went to the doctor and was diagnosed pre-diabetic. Had to cut down on my carbs. Me and low carbs are not a good mix. A way to help is to eat something with protein, otherwise once all the carbs are broken down, there's nothing left for the body to use. Eating protein with carbs (whole grain crackers with cheese) helps.Alot. Dangit.....I miss my carbs...

Definitely get the tester and test strips. Then start testing him before/after meals and throughout the day to get an idea of typical for him.

Back in the day I was on a certain drug that required monthly bloodwork. After first month of bloodwork, got called back and told that I was hypoglycemic. I believe my blood sugar was 33. Should have been in a coma. Most people would get rushed to hospital for that. I didn't even know at the time.

Diabetes runs in the family here as well and I have been told that I am headed in that direction. Sigh.

At the very least group your carbs with proteins and go for complex carbs instead of simple ones. Wheat pasta instead of regular. Wheat bread instead of white bread. Etc.

x2. I have Hypoglycemia, I am and always have been a HUGE meat/fat eater. I had tried to change my diet a few years ago due to my cholesterol being 219. I started eating more breads, rice and pasta. One day at work I had steamed rice, vegetables and a small amount of boiled chicken. 45 minutes later, people started asking me what was wrong. I guess I was acting really weird. I was pale, shaking, sweaty and very weak feeling. One of the other nurses checked my blood sugar and it was 40. They fed me a candy bar, I then took my lunch and popped over to Sizzler and got a steak and Malibu to go. I talked to my doctor about it and she told me it was reactive hypoglycemia. I crave meat and fats for a reason. This is the method of energy my body can use the best. I try to keep to lean proteins now and if my cholesterol gets to high I take meds for it and/or start walking daily. Get an accumeter from the drug store and start checking your husbands blood sugars before he eats and if he is having symptoms. Also, get him to a Dr. regardless of whether you ins or not. A office visit is not that expensive $20.00 $50.00. If you come in with a record of blood sugars, food log and episode history it can go a long way toward helping the Dr. to come to a conclusion. Better to be out of some money than to be out of a husband.

Going back to the OP post on her hub having to purge during meals. This could be due to esophageal issues that can lead to worse things. I suggest taking him to see someone about his blood sugar and his esophagus.

Last week I was dx as pre diabetic and wondered what kind of carbs you CAN have and can not have.

I love my apple salad...granny smith, vanilla light yogurt, raisins and marshmellow as a sweet treat! Snacks, I'd prefer popcorn. Hope I can eat that unless you got some substitute I can use!

I love my beef, the leanest, the better I like them. Fish, oh yes, I love them! Chicken, well, I love them fried.

When I was 135 lbs, my cholestrol was 650, LDL, was 300 and my HDL was 25 blood sugar count 66 was excellent.

Now it is 183, HDL 48, triglycerides 146, LDL is 106, glucose panel is 100. Alkaline Phosphatase is 140, sed rate y modified Westergren is 38, RBC-5.15. I simply weigh too much, close to 245 lbs. Being on BC, steriods for back pain, pain meds all that jazz, really messed me up.

Better find the money to send him to the doctor. Wait too long, and he might be going to a mortician.

That is so awesome, and not an easy accomplishment, good for you. Blood sugar control while on steriods isn't easy.

Not here, in rural Oklahoma, or even urban Oklahoma, a Dr's visit is $80-$100 not counting lab costs. This issue isn't the cost of the Dr.'s visit though, it is going to a Dr. and getting a diagnosis w/o having insurance in place can make you uninsurable on anything except a large group policy. True group policies now and for several years have had federal regulations in place where they can't easily pre exist you, except if you aren't coming from a group policy then they can pre-exist you and not cover your medical expenses for up to two years. Individual or not true group policies don't even have that protection, they can out right deny you any insurance at all, not cover the diabetes ever, not cover it for 2 years, or make it so unaffordable you are basically uninsurable.

Doc said I'm still too high. I thought 99 was of acceptable level on the high end of blood glucose. Must be the candy I've been eating the week prior getting tested. I'm not on steriods for a while but WAS. Thought steriods stay in your body for that long.
