I'm not sure but I think they keep away other nuisance bugs by keeping things tidy.

Their wikipedia entry says they do — their larvae will eat larvae of other species, specifically houseflies & blowflies. It's the first item in the list that includes the item on reducing bacteria in hen manure I mentioned in my earlier post.
