Pretty much the title, I’m looking for pictures of what the coronation carnation comb looks like in chicks. I know they look like a single comb for the most part until they branch off in the back. I was wondering if you could see the part where it branches off in the chicks or if you have to wait until they’re older for it to start developing?

It isn't visible in day old chicks and not in pullets for a couple months or more. Cockerels are showing by 3 or 4 weeks.
I thought it was coronation comb at first because it is also called 'kings comb'. However, the name is carnation comb because it is supposed to resemble a flower in the back.
There are a bunch of chick pictures at the bottom of the following link.

I have a few various age chicks I'll try to get some pictures of to help you.
Do you have Penedesencas or Empordanesas? If Penes, what variety?

Oh, geez, I’m pretty sure me and my cousin have been through the coronation/carnation thing before, lol. He’s been at the chicken game a lot longer than I have. No wonder I couldn’t really find anything on it here. :gig

Anyways, I’m trying to figure out if I actually have a partridge penedesenca. I was at Meyer Hatchery Tuesday and picked this girl ( Chunk ) out of the bin from the day’s leftover hatch. The bin chicks are supposed to be all sexed pullets, but I’m sure there’s some mistakes here and there.

I could be wrong but that comb looks quite large for a pullet. How old is it supposed to be?
A day old on Tuesday, apparently. There was another chick that I picked out that had a lot of feather growth on its wings.

Here’s the other chick: It’s already getting feathers on its legs too, so I think they might have been older than a day.

In my experience a Penedesenca pullet's comb won't be that big by day 5. I think you may have a boy.
Does Meyer say how reliable their sexing is?
The coloring does say female to me but the comb says boy.

They don’t really say specifically. They say they strive for a 100% accuracy, so I say they are more around the 90%. I do know it varies on certain breeds. I got quite a bit of pullets from them back in April ( around 20 ) and none of them look like boys yet.

Is it possible Chunk is just a fast maturing girl?
