Last week I had a big... HUGE cardboard brooder I used for my older babies. I had 2 geese and about 4 ducks and a couple older chicks.
Well, the hose from our barn got somehow caught on the brooder, so when tugged, the whole brooder fell over. So now there were a bunch of babies that needed wrangled up. And now, I had no more big brooders.
So while I figured out what to do with them, I had my 2 geese and 3 silkies in a big aquarium brooder I had (I sold the 4 ducklings).
I went down the other day to find that my pure white silkies had their butt feathers torn out and the geese were the culprits. They had blood on their bills. I was so disgusted with them. So I moved the silkies into a big tub to heal their poor butts, and the geese babies have been kicked out of the brooder and are in a pen outside. I was so unhappy.
My silver swedish drake went missing a few days ago, so I figured some type of predator had gotten him, since something had gotten my blue slate hen. So I decided I'd take a look. I scoured the woods below my house to find pieces of skeleton with fresh blueish-grey slate feathers attached to them. Ahah. They were either from my silver swedish or my blue slate.
My crested rouen hen had been nesting for awhile, and last week while I was outside I saw her, with 4 ducklings following behind her. She had 2 rouens, a crested and noncrested, and 2 swedish's, a crested and noncrested. I had a customer who wanted the noncresteds, and I kept the 2 cresteds to replace ducks I lost this year, plus I wanted more cresteds
So, out of 24 ducklings hatched this year, I sold 20, and have 4 here, 3 of which are staying and one already has a customer interested in it. I did a lot better then I thought I would.
My peachicks are all doing very well, they have their crowns/crests. I am so excited to see what they turn out to be, males or females.
Just thought I'd take some time and let everyone know
