Carrying a chicken

The lady I got my last chickens from caught them with a fish net and carried them by there ankles. The chickens became very still when placed upside down. She said this is the best way to carry a chicken. I was wondering if this was overly stressful to the bird?

Holding a bird upside down is inherently risky.

This is how I hold my chickens.

Chickens should not be help upside down, as it can restrict airways and cause stress to other organs. It's best to just hold them upright.

Support the keel and feet, hold down the wings.
Her doing that, is not a good sign.
Make sure to completely quarantine the need birds from any existing birds for a whole month.

I agree, catching with the fish net is fine if you must catch them right away but you should never hold a bird upside down. I would be a bit leery of her

They became very still because they were terrified and could not breath.
It's the best way to carry them for the human not the chicken.

Go old school we did the upside down for years as a kid.
Never hurt a bird doing that better than have a spur in your hand.

Holding a chicken upside down can also result in fluid coming up from their crop and choking them.
