This is my first time hatching and I have 34 turkey eggs and 20 chicken eggs that have made it this far after we candled for the final time last night.

I have two hatching trays and my question is this: Should I leave room in the trays next to the cartons? The reason I'm asking is that in order to allow some space between the eggs I'm only using every other cup in the cartons. This means for the turkeys at least that the entire hatching tray is filled with the cartons necessary to hold them all. Would it be better to use every cup in every carton so as to leave some space between the cartons?

Also, I don't know that it was really necessary but in the interests of promoting as much oxygen exchange as possible I cut out the bottom of each cup that is holding an egg. I was not able to decide whether it would make any real difference or not so I opted to go with the cautious approach.

What do you think?

.....Alan.

I would be interested in the answer, too.

I try and leave some room around the cartons for them to walk around in until the hatch is over and I take them out. I put the eggs side by side in the carton and don't leave room between them. I use the pulp cartons and I don't cut the bottoms out......I just remove the lids.
