carving eggs

My DH and i own a dental lab (any dentists out there?) in my free time I like to blow out the eggs and use the dental handpiece (drill) and carve designs in the eggs. They can be very fragile to work on but its fun to work out the design for each egg.

Sounds pretty cool - do you have any pictures of your finished shells?

I dont have any finished now. I gave a couple for christmas. They take some time to finish and they sometimes break when i am about finished. If I dont plan the pattern well I can end up cutting away something that ruins the whole egg OR I cut myself into an area that will make a piece fall out. I got an ostrich egg once and had a blast with it but after doing chicken and duck eggs i was a little intimidated by such a large canvas! I tried to use a dremel tool but they seem to have to much vibration for the delicate egg shell. I now use a high speed drill with fine burs and suction. They smell like burning feathers when I drill on them!!

I've been wanting to try that with duck eggs, but only have a dremel to work with.

Hi Dipsy Doodle, you can try the dremel just keep your design larger. If you try something too delicate the vibration may break it. It always breaks just when you are about finished and soooo proud of yourself try a tree with the trunk at the fat end and do branches at random or a flower to start. good luck!

I’m wondering if you could recommended a dental drill and burs to buy for egg carving. I’d like to do the really detailed shells that look like lace… I’ve been looking on eBay but if you have a better idea I would love the advise….
