Sourdough Hens

Romance
This girl is Griffin and probably Hawk's daughter. She lays tiny bright blue eggs just a tint browner than her mom's. She has a pea comb. Romance is my smallest hen, probably only weighing 3-4ish lbs. She is very shy, and has barring. Very gray smoky looking feathers and thick hackles. She has a blue-ish tint to her legs like her most-likely mom, Hawk.

Here's the list of chickens who are in the "program" right now.
  • Abby (roo w/ muffs and pea comb)
  • Romance (small hen w/ pea comb)
  • Vengeance and maybe?? Velociraptor (rose comb, black feathers, very sleek looking-only applies to Vengeance)
  • Creek (rose comb; fluffy; hefty)
  • Crook (rose comb; fluffy; hefty)
  • Crippler (rose comb; fluffy; hefty)
  • Cranberry (single comb, fluffy, dark feathers; hefty)
  • Croatia (single comb, fluffy; hefty)
  • Chainsaw (crest, single comb, VERY hardy)
  • Hawk (pea comb; muffs)
I'm going to add several Pavlovskaya chicks (to add new blood and maybe replace Abby if a roo is better than him) to the flock this summer. I will also keep 2-4 muffed and rose or pea-combed hens to raise up from my flock.

I had to cull one of my hens (Jinu) due to a prolapse. She had a lot of fat on her and I feel like about a 1/3 of her body cavity had eggs/reproductive system in it. Does anyone think that would be normal? After plucking her I could tell that her eggs were HUGE compared to her body size. Poor girl. Reminder to me of why I don't want my chickens to lay all the time like traditional egg layers.

Sooo 6-8 year old Chainsaw laid an egg today.... Should I put it in the bator? I want to and I would love to have chickies with crests and maybe muffs, but it's still chilly out :( I also don't know when she's going to lay again with her age. Hmmmmm...

Reminder: Chainsaw is definitely my most disease resistant and healthiest hen.

Eggs went in the bator today! There's 15 of them. And, yes, its cold out, but they'll stay inside for about 4 weeks and then be transitioned outside with a heat plate.

The father is Abby (muffs, pea comb, thick hackles, pretty)
Cr rose - Creek, Crook, or Crippler
Cr- Cranberry, Croatia, Creek, Crook, Crippler
  • #1 from Jinu, very unlikely to hatch
  • #2 from Chainsaw
  • #3 from Chainsaw? It was in the fridge for a few days.
  • #4 from Chainsaw but is paler than first egg
  • #5 from Vengeance or Cr rose
  • #6 from most likely Cr
  • #7 SPECKLES from most likely Cranberry or another Cr; was in fridge
  • #8 from Cr rose
  • #9 from Cr rose
  • #10 from Velociraptor
  • #11 from Velociraptor
  • #12 from Romance
  • #13 tan with little speckles; unknown mom
  • #14 nice pinkish brown; unknown mom
  • #15 from Cr rose or Vengeance
We are definitely going to be getting some cool chicks. I'll raise all of these guys up to about 3 months and then choose who to keep. I want muffs, crests, rose/walnut combs, or a hefty weight. Since Chainsaw has a single comb, her chicks will only be pea or single combed. It doesn't hurt if they're pretty, too!
