Fountains Abbey is a World Heritage Site in Yorkshire, England We visited on a cold November day; the ground was covered with sparkling, crunchy frost, and the sky was pale and still. This is the largest ruined abbey in the country. The 800 acre site also includes beautiful Georgian water gardens and pleasant walking paths. I'll spread the photos over a few posts.

Got something different today. A 19th century copper mine near Allihies, Co Cork




I couldn't get closer for a better pic, sorry! That place was fenced up like a jail to stop people falling down the shafts.
 
Avila, in the north of Spain, is surrounded by these medieval granite walls. It took an incredible amount of work to build them. They rise up from the natural granite outcroppings of that hilltop.


Here is Mrs. Gargoyle walking the path on top of the walls:


If you look closely, you'll see her looking back through the crenelations on top of the turret:



And here she is waving to me from one of the town gates:
