I am trying add protien for my Turkeys and coturnix.. I have 3 BBB Turkeys and had sold 6 to a fellow BYCER she commented that they needed a higher protien.. I have checked all my local feed stores and cant find anything higher then 24%.. Would adding cat food help with this ??? Also should I break it up or moisten it first ???
Thanks in advance for any advice...

I feed my BB Whites 22% protein from the time they are born until I process. They gain 20 lbs live weight on average in about 4 months, so I would say they have plenty of protein. The quail will do just fine on the 24% as well, however they will benefit from the cat food if you give it to them. Just feed it to them dry and they will eat it up.

* just make sure the cat food is higher than 24% protein otherwise you will lower their overall protein intake

Awesome thanks Jeff.. I was concerned as they cornish are HUGE compared to the Turkeys.. and they were hatched at the same time... I will diverge to your wisdom though and not worry about the turkeys..

while you are on here.. Quick question.. i have my Cornish X on wire at the moment they are almost three weeks.. I have lost two now to leg problems.. I have been feeding on 12hrs off 12 for about 5 days now.. Is it normal to loose two this quick to leg problems or is it the wire.. ( I did the wire as I couldnt keep up with the poo and some where getting pasty butt..)

Jaku could probably help you better on the wire issue. I brood all of mine on the floor, I personally think they do better on litter. But mine usually are in tractors by 2-3 weeks so manure is less of a problem. Manure is a huge issue after 2 weeks if your limited on time or space so wire is good choice as long as they are off of it before they get too heavy.

With that said, it's usually not normal to lose them to leg problems that young. Maybe the wire is to big? If they catch their toes in 1/2 inch hardware cloth they may strain their joints. I would ask Jaku and see what gauge wire he uses, how long he has them on wire, ect. Hopefully he will chime in.
