Cat in the run...

Most of y'all know I lost my Kit Kat last week, she had gotten in the road (first time in three years), and got hit.

A month or so ago, some yella tom started hanging around. I didn't think much of him, he would spray everything he could, but I knew Kit Kat was fixed, so wasn't worried about that.

ANYWAY, I figured he would leave, not seeing Kit Kat around, but he still comes through her door to eat and sleep, so he's still here. I got home from work this afternoon, and headed out the back door to feed the babies.

There lays this yellow cat, sprawled out, sunning, right in the middle of the run, with chickens all around him!!! I have some itty bitty ones out there, too! They were all there and accounted for, so I ran back in to get the camera, of course when I came back, he was gone

. Naturally. Sorta hope this happens again so I can catch it!!

BTW, it wasn't the first time I've seen him in there, I've seen him sitting in there before, but never laid out flat on his side! My very first thought was "OMG, the chickens killed the cat!!!" And the oldest of the batch aren't even four months old yet...

Sounds like a keeper. Any cat who will take a nap amongst itty bitty chicks is a real keeper. I have a big ole orange stray that loves to sleep in run, in coop, even in nest boxes next to them. Keep him and have him neutered. He'll keep the mice/rats away.

He really does sound like he's meant to be with you.

Gosh I hate to sound like a downer, but he might just not have ever killed a bird before. That doesn't mean he never will though..... Also, he doesn't have to kill them to bring about their demise, as it only takes a small, and not usually fatal, claw wound.

I have cats which wander the yard with my adult heavy hens, when they are not in their run, and I've never had a problem, but I'd never trust them with a younger bird.

Is there a way to protect the young ones? He really does sound terrific, and I'm thrilled that you have a chance to help him live a good life.

He's still a little spooky. As strange as it may sound, you can't walk directly up to him, he's got to walk up to you when you are SITTING. Or, if you get him cornered, you can pet him, and he'll rub all over you, loves having his head scratched, all that jazz.

I'm kinda like Ducky...what is he UP to???

I guess the only way I could keep him outta there is if I put a netting over the top of the run. I have to watch the dogs really closely, they will give chase to anything at all, cat, chicken, whatever, but I was really amused by this guy.

It'll be so hard to give him a name now, we've been calling him "Yella Cat" since he came here a couple of months ago. Sorta feel like Holly Golightly with her not naming her cat, cause he didn't "belong" to her!!

Sounds like he wants to be your cat! If there's anyway to catch him and have him neutered I'd do it and then keep him.

I would keep an eye on him around the little chicks but it sounds like he's a gem and should become part of your family.

Maybe he sees how good your chickens have it and he wants a piece of the action!

And, if you can catch him and get him nuetered it will help with the spraying issue....

Sounds like he has adopted you whether you want him to or not
