cat lost his voice? acting strange

my 4 year old male cat seemed to have lost his voice a week ago. it started to get raspy now theres no meow when he opens his mouth. hes been sticking around the barn alot lately too, dont know why really its not that abnormally hot or anything. hes usually lazy, but hes just laying around not doing much when hes usually not here during most of the day- off hunting. hes been eating. why would he have lost his voice? could there be a problem and i should have him seen by the vet? i thought maybe with the crazy kitten around he may have been hissing at them so much he lost his voice lol but not im a little concerned..

I've cared for several cats that had voice loss caused by URI's from a virus of one type or another. Agreeing that it's a good idea to it checked to try to find out what's going on.
