Hi, I was just wondering if anyone else's cat did this lol. When my cat sees a fly or any other kind of bug he makes a cackling dolphiny sound. Its really cute. I'm not sure if its his breed or if every cat does this. He is a straight eared scottish fold, he is scared of birds, fish, etc. He doesn't act like a cat, which is good because we have a house full of birds.

Our former barn kitty, who now lives in the house and terrorizes everything in it, makes a chattering noise and salivates anytime she sees something she thinks might be tasty.

the noise is a response to prey - i believe its when they try to vocalize thru what WOULD be the 'killing bite' IF they could get the prey in their mouths.... the bite is to get thru the prey's spinal cord.

sure you think its cute until you know what it is!!! ewwweeeewwuuueuuueeee!!!

and yes they all do it
:)

yea i knew it was his "hunting call" but he is scared of anything other than bugs. like i said he's not a real cat. but i did not know it was used for killing the prey. I just thought he made the noise when he got upset that he couldn't catch the fly lol.

I've seen videos on youtube of people who have cats who do this-- they'll be staring out the window and make little chattering noises when looking at birds outside. I think it's pretty neat.

Can't tell you about whether it's specific to any breeds or not, though....

My Siamese does that chattering when he sees sparrows. It it cute, until you see what it means - when he caught and ate that poor bird - eeeewwwwwww!

I am so glad that my cats are not bird/mouse eaters. My neighbors cat is. I hate getting birds left on my doorstep. Does anyone elses cat make a brrrrrrrip noise lol.
