Cat with hairballs?

My black cat Harley made a mess in my floor. Before I could positively identify what this mess was my mind thought he has pooped in the floor . Come to find out it was car hair shaped like turds would be. They were covered in undigested dry cat food. Why did this happen? Is it normal to be this shape? I always thought hair balls would be ball shape . Sorry for the graphic details but I'm worried about him. He will be a year in August.

That's what hair balls look like, not sure why they are called balls either. You can buy hairball remedy at the store and give your cat some to lick daily or every other day to keep the hairballs going out the other end. My cats always loved the stuff.

I've never actually seen a hair ball I just always imagined it would be like a ball of hair or like what comes from a clogged drain. My other cat has never has this happen so I was unprepared. Is it normal to be covered in cat food?

The hair ball was probably preventing stuff from moving through the digestive tract. So you may want to get something for at least the one cat to prevent any blockages.
