Hello all! Yesterday my rapist rooster got into my brody's nest. I'm not sure if he broke several eggs or she did. There is egg goo everywhere and 2 dead embryos. The hen ate some I assume, but she was otherwise covered and stinky. I put her in a tub of water, as with 3 eggs because they were stuck to her . She is not happy and the eggs were on day 9. Suggestions? Are the eggs viable? Shes dust bathing, without the eggs. I have them in a towel in the sun.

She is looking to get back to the nest. Will the water have ruined the eggs?
People water candle eggs so I don't see how the water would ruin them. I would worry more about the movement that they received when the rooster was in there and from bathing. I would just let her sit on them again because either they are going to hatch or they are not. Hopefully they'll hatch :fl I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you!

Sorry this happened but the best advice I can give you is the same advice I was given when I first started having broody hens. Separate the broody hen so this cannot happen again. She needs her own pen where she can get out of the nest, poop, stretch her legs and grab a bite to eat without being harrassed by the other hens or your rooster.

Please don't be hard on your rooster. It's their way. They don't look at it as being forced mating. It's what they do and they are driven to do it until they mature and learn to be a little more considerate to the hens in their care.

She may be broody yet. Time will tell. As for the eggs. Anyone's guess. Eggs are porous so bacteria may be introduced. If you have an incubator you could put them in the incubator then candle them for viability. I'd keep a close eye on them to make sure the embryos don't die before they mature.

Hope everything works out.

My rooster should have gone days ago. He attacks everyone but had a good several days so I decided to keep him. He will run 100 yards to attack me. But I do know, that that is nature. She has been separated in a little coop we built, that is going to go ontop of her own run for she and the chicks. I had it open barely and he squeezed in.
