Catching crickets?

My girls and I just catch them with our hands, or we go to the fishing supply and buy them. We only catch them to feed to the chickens. They LOVE them.

Ok this is going to sound crazy but its how i did it when i was little.
oh, and it helps if u actually live where there are enough crickets to catch

first lay a large piece of cardboard down flat on the ground where its fairly shaded and somewhat moist. (next to a flower bed. etc etc) then leave it for maybe three days. after a few days you take a cardboard box and cut the top and bottom flaps off of it so u just have the four sides. then, with box in hand go pick up your flat lying peice of cardboard really really fast and put the box with no bottom down over where the card board was. then you catch the crickets as fast as you can. oh and theyll either be there or they wont. like i said its far fetched, but its how we did it.
p.s. if your chickens like rolly pollies or dooddle bugs this is a good way to catch those to.

I tie a big gulp cup to the handle of the lawn mower in the summertime and scoop up the crickets as I mow. In the cup they go. Takes about three times longer to mow the grass this way.

Hahaha!! mmtillman you are funny.

Cornishrockbabies sounds good I will try it. We live in palmetto/pine scrub w/ soo many good bugs to catch-thanks!

Gritsar I will try your method too. I can attach cup to our 4 wheeler and cruise around. We only have to cut grass here about twice a year which is great.

I just hit the bug jackpot today. There are millions a box elder bugs right out the back door. My girls are going to be stuffed!

We live in big woods and we are still clearing off our land. We cut down trees, let them dry, then pile them up for a big bon fire. While they dry, termites invade the downed trees. We knock off some bark and there will be bezillions of termites and the chickens act like it is the best day of their lives when they see termites!! Especially the baby chicks.

I don't catch crickets but there is an abundance of bug life around here. I just hope they work on all the spiders!

My 8 year old had lizards and I spent many many mornings out catching those little light colored moths for them to eat fresh. You can get crickets pretty reasonable for treats at PetsMart I think. . .old basements are full of them too. I found out our pet mice love bugs too, so anything I see in the house that looks safe to catch

I throw it in their cage. You should see them, they go nuts!!! Protein I guess.
