Has anyone had interesting or upsetting experiences involving their cat and turkeys?
My cat is old and not very active. She only ever caught two mice and they both escaped. I think she would catch a bird only if it flew into her open mouth. She seems annoyed by bird sounds as if she knows she should do something about it but doesn't want to.
However, she is a predator and I wonder whether the instinct to kill might take control of her one day when the poults get close. They forage all over the land and will suddenly rush, wings flapping, to another patch. The cat might be sitting anywhere out there. She does occasionally watch them and has been seen to run away from them. Today, they were rushing to another patch of land when they came face to face with her. I froze whilst a stand off took place, ready to act should the cat attack. She eventually turned and walked away. My wife saw it happen and called them but they all followed the cat - more their real mum's size than we are, I suppose. The cat escaped!
It's funny to watch but I worry that we might have a bad ending to one of these episodes one day. I'd welcome stories from others, reassuring or warning tales.
