Hey guys,
Yes i know about backyard herds but i like BYC better. So i thought i would make this thread for all of us cattle farmers, future cattle farmers or just dreamers who want cattle. I also want to include sock showers to because the more the better

This is place where we can ask questions, share your ups and downs, our experiences and most importantly make friends. It does not matter who you are or why you joined this chat.

i will start with sharing a little bit about me.
I live on a family run and owned cow calf beef operation. we have black angus and Hereford cross cattle. I am in 4-h and show poultry and waterfowl and beef cows. i am also in ffa and compete in poultry evaluation. I love the opportunity my family has given me to show cattle and have part ownership of our farm.

Hi @ejtrout31, :frow

I'm want a future farm, but not all cattle. I want maybe 8 milkers and 3 beef. (Lots of other animals too but will keep that for a different thread) I want to learn all about beef cattle before milk. #1 Q. is: Does male or female taste better? :p

I would like to raise a beef cow or two, and I would also like to to do a replacement dairy heifer. What is the best age to get a cow so you can train them to be friendly and show well?

You can get a calf from someone days after its born. You could get a bottle calf that you feed milk replacement. Another option is you could purchase a calf that has it the weaning age and can be fed hay and grain. Or you could purchase a cow that is either bred or comes with a calf. whatever option you choose the key to a docile animal is time and practice.
