Okay, so I read an article recently directed to newbies like myself that said you should caulk the corners and crevices in your coops to prevent mites and ticks from taking up residence there. First off- is there any truth to this? Secondly, if this has truth, how do you keep the chickens from pecking at the stuff and ingesting it? Thirdly, what type of caulk would be best? I never would have thought of this, but I am hesitant to do it to our new coop b/c I just don't see how you could possible get the birds not to ingest the stuff. Chickens pretty much peck at just about anything.

I'm not sure about the caulking but I painted the inside with semi gloss white latex paint, a couple of heavy coats seemed to fill in the small cracks and brightened up the inside and should be a breeze to clean.

My coops are fully calked.....

Any place water could potentially get in it's calked, that's the reason I calked them to keep them dry.

The chickens and turkeys don't bother the calk, and the inside is always bone dry. Which makes clean up a breeze and I don't have to do it as often. I just used silicone that was on sale at lowes. I'm sure it helps keep the bugs out too.
