Cayuga Color genetics?

I was over on Ebay looking at Caygua eggs, they come in colors besides Black? Someone had Blue, Black and Splash, and said the blacks loose their color and turn white with age??? They had all dif colored eggs too.

My Buff girls are once again alone.

I introduced the Cayuga Drake, they were sooo happy. And the next morning, a Fox had gotten him. I don't think I am ever destined to get fertile eggs out of my girls!

Okay in my opinion Cayugas are only suppose to some in black and any other color people clam as Cayuga is not. And some hens will develope and continue to develope white in there feathers with age. Some hens never will tho. Some hens will have white down will develope the white feathers, hens with black down won't. That being said you want the white in the hens. Meaning they are recessive for the green sheen not dominant. And you DO NOT want to breed to dominant gened birds together because it causes them to give off a purple instead of a green sheen. That being said if a drake has any white at all on him I remove him from my breeding program instantly. Because a drake with white will throw drakes with white which aren't allowed to be showed. So breed a dominant gened drake to a recessive gened hen and you get great offspring. But never a dominant to dominant. These genetics work the same for Black East Indies as well.

Thanks! I wasn't sure on the blue and splash thing, I didn't know if Black in ducks worked the same as in chickens.

What about egg color? They're supposed to be a dark color, right?

I was thinking about getting some of the Black East Indies here, or maybe some Calls. The ducks are just not cooperating with my plans, sure, the girls are now laying, but not fertile due to my lack of a drake. I planned to hatch out eggs this spring and then "upgrade" to better stock come fall. Who showed my ducks my plan???

I'm going to try (yet again) to pick them up a Drake, Hopefully I can find a pair of Cayugas this time. I should PU an extra drake or three the way I am having issues keeping them!

I have black, blue, and silver cayugas. I hatched them out from a fellow BYCer. The colors do work the same as in Chickens. My girls started laying dark eggs in the beginning as they lay the eggs are getting lighter. Now, they are a pale blue. I love these ducks. They are great to be around.

Blue in ducks is incompletely dominant and works basically the same as in chickens. Blue and Silver Cayugas are still Cayugas. There is no such thing as a bird being dominant for a gene and another being recessive for the gene. The gene is either dominant or it isn't. It is either recessive or it isn't. That is the basic, Genetics 101 explanation without going into more complicated detail.

I have all 3 colors, have bred them for years. main color is black, but the blues and splash (silver) are cayugas reguardless of what others may say. I have loads of pics on various thread of them, and they are on my website too, not a lick of difference other that the color (and rarity of it) Main reason most say they only come black, they have just never seen one in blue or splash. And yes, they breed just like the blue in chickens, black on blue gives 50% each ruffly with a rare splash thrown in.
Eggs can be near black to off white. They are never always black, usually off white or grey in color.
White in hens is aceptable as the others have mentioned, especially with age.
