Cd's really work

So my DH laughed at me when I put the cd's up in the chicken run. "A little light listening for the chickens dear? "
Well he discovered today that it was not just a silly idea. I went out to let the chickens out of the run to free range a little later than usual today. Good thing. When I got to the coop, there was not a chicken in the run. They were all cowering in the corner and nest boxes of the coop. DH who was working in the garage said they were all scared because the largest hawk he had ever seen when swooping over the run but could not navigate through the cd's.

The chickens are all still huddled in the coop and the hawk is long gone. I wonder how long it will take them to decide to come out again?

It may have been an eagle. I have seen immature bald eagles. They don't get the white heads and tails until they are around 5 years old and look like big hawks. I did the same thing with fishing line except an owl did get through and kill some birds. Good luck...

I had a predator slam against the side of the run flapping its wings trying to get the chicken it was aiming for but couldn't .The hen flew and ran inside and wouldn't come out the rest of the day .Its been scared of its own shadow ever since and doesn't venture out far from the coop door anymore.Hope you get some bird netting on top before it comes back because the cds and strings won't likely stop it for long.

We do have bald eagles in the area and have seen some immature ones in the past. I did not see it, so I can't say what it was. We are keeping watch.

I will likely have to replace the string each year. In fact one is broken now so needs to be replaced. The problem with netting is that come winter, the snow collects on top and then it just sags and breaks. I used netting last year, but my run was very small and the fence was low.

I hope your hen learns to venture out again. Glad she was safe.
