So about two weeks ago I had an RIR rooster pass away after he got an infection on his leg from being attacked by a dog. I didn’t want my hen to be lonely so I went out and bought a bantam Polish pair. One hen and one rooster. A couple of days later the rooster died. He had diarrhea, so I’m pretty sure he had worms or something. I’ve been watching my hens very closely since then, and noticed some weird poop yesterday. The first picture is from my RIRxAmeraucana hen that I had originally and with the other pictures I’m not sure which hen they came from. Do you guys think it’s just cecal poop or do you think they have worms? If they have worms, what’s the recommended dewormer and dosage for a full size hen and bantam hen? I’ve tried to do research but I’m still not sure. Thanks in advance!

I should probably add that all of the poop under the roost is normal, and there’s also been fresh poop in their little “yard” that was normal.

I'm sorry for your losses:hugs
It would be a good idea to get a fecal float if possible.

It's hard to know if that's worms or just cecal poop since that can be all kinds of colors and textures.

If you don't have vet care, then you can deworm with Valbazen or Fenbendazole (Safeguard) either one will take care of most worms that chickens have.

Dosage for Valbazen is 0.08ml per pound of weight, given orally once, then repeat in 10days.

Dosage for Fenbendazole (Safeguard) is .23ml per pound of weight given orally for 5 days in a row.

Thank you so much! I wish I had a vet around that treated chickens, but unfortunately I don’t :( I’ll see if I can get a hold of some dewormer then. Thanks again!

It appears that valbazen is gonna be hard to find lol. So if I use safeguard, which one do I get? Do I use the horse paste, I’ve seen people say to use pea size drop of that daily. Or do I get the goat one?

Get the Goat liquid dewormer. No don't use pea size doses for anything:)
Even if you got the paste, measure it out into your syringe, but the liquid is easy to draw up and measure. (.23ml per pound of weight, given orally 5days in a row)

Valbazen, I order it online, it's more expensive but a bottle will last a long time and dose many chickens.

Thanks for the help! I’ll probably stick with the safe guard then, since I only have 2 chickens currently (hawks ate 5 of my chickens, I now have a hawk proof area for them). I’m planning on getting some silkies and Wyandotte’s this spring, but I want to figure out what’s going on with my girls first.

Ok, I bought the safeguard. My rir hen weighed 4.5 pounds, so I gave her 1 mL. My polish hen weighed 33 ounces so I gave her .5 mL. I need to do this for 4 more days in a row, and I don’t need to repeat afterwards. Does that sound right? I read something that said the max you should give them is .5 mL, but then they also said to give .25 mL per pound so it didn’t really add up.

You have it right, give that for 4 more days.

Sometimes when reading other posts or threads you may need to read the whole thing to see why a dosage or recommendation is being made. A lot of people round up to .25ml per pound because the math is a little easier :)
