Lowes is closing out certain sizes of cedar boards, and they're a great bargain.

1"x8"x10' are $8.99

1"x2"x8' are $1.69

Several other sizes are also on sale, cheaper than pine.

If you want to build a really nice coop, there'll probably never be a better time to buy cedar. I went to the two closes Lowes and hand-selected enough nice boards to build a board-and-batten 10'x16' coop.

Thanks for the tip, you know where I'll be this weekend.

I just got a 10% off coupon in the mail, for Lowe's!

I thought that cedar was toxic to smaller animals? (supposed to use pine shavings, instead of cedar.. right?)
Or is that only if they eat it? Anyone know waht the deal w/ that is?

Sounds like a good deal on the wood!

The kind of cedar that some people say may be toxic to chickens is the kind used for shavings, which is Eastern Red Cedar, or Aromatic Cedar. (It's actually a juniper - Juniperus virginiana.)

This lumber on sale is Western Red Cedar, a different species. It's good for siding because like a good wife it's light and stable and will last longer than you will.

I can't imagine there would be a toxicity problem with it. It doesn't give off the fumes that Eastern Cedar does, siding doesn't have nearly as much surface area as shavings do, and it should be sealed for weather protection anyway.
