I noticed for the past couple of days i had a bad fly problem in my coop. I have been reading on here about what to do but today when i went to my dads house to check on his chickens i noticed no flys in his coop. I looked around and he had cedar chips on the floor. I thought i would try this and when i layed it out on the floor of my coop the flys couldnt get out quick enough. does anyone else use them in their coops and get the same result? I would love to hear what yall think.

I'm absolutely no expert, but I've read a lot about cedar chips and that they aren't good for the chicken's respiratory systems? Maybe someone else more knowledgable can chime in to help more. ANd it's possible that it may be ok for bigger chickens vs. baby chicks. Do a search for cedar chips on here adn see what you can find. HTH!

I dont use cedar all the time but how long will it take to effect them. I only use them every 6 months or so most of the time i use wheat staw for the nest and keep the coop floors clean.

Not sure how long it takes to effect them so to speak but I hear of it killing peoples chicks rather quickly - like as soon as they realized there was a problem they were already dead and survivors dropping like flies - no pun intended. I'd say the risk of the cedar far outweighs the risk of flies - whom the chooks probably enjoy chasing to try and eat from time to time if yours are anything like mine.
