Can you use cedar chips in the pigeon loft?I know the mice do not like the cedar chips so was wondering if you can use it with pigeons as I know you can't with the chickens. It seems no matter how tight I make everything a mouse finds a way into the loft.

Ceader will be fine.

I have also read that pine will cause respiratory problems

LOL. In the end, any kind of dust can cause respiratory problems. Cedar can be toxic if you don't have any ventilation. But if you do, then you'll be fine!

Mice don't like cedar chips? Good to know.

I'll add that to my list of "why I love cedar chips".

My list so far:
Natural insect deterrent
Smells awesome
Cheap
Easy to transport
Easy to rake and scoop up
Can be reused as mulch around my trees and bushes

We've got an 8' x 20' coop with one open wall, and the floor has always been cedar chips, about 3 bags covers it. When it gets icky, I scoop shovel it into a wheel barrow and spread it under my trees. I can also throw another layer on it, if the weather isn't conducive to shoveling it out.

Note...Every place I use cedar chips is very airy, so I don't worry about fumes. I used to have pet rats, and it's a big no-no with them, because their cages are often more closed.

Oh, wait...we had mice like crazy in our coop. I'm guessing mice aren't all that opposed to cedar chips.

Bummer. I was doing a search for mice, as in: "how to control them". I'll keep searching.
