ceder is the red shavings, pine is white. Ceder has toxins that are released and can cause respratory issues.

Never. Cedar chips irritate the respiratory system of a lot of animals. Although they sell cedar chips packed for hamsters, guinea pigs, etc, our vet even warned us not to use cedar with the guinea pig years ago. And with pine shavings so readily available, there really is no need for cedar chips. While you might get away with it for a while, why chance it?

years ago (maybe close to 20) I used cedar as it smelled so much better in our guinea pig cages, well dont ya know they both died and the vet said it was because of the cedar shavings giving them sniffles! he said the only thing cedar should be used for is mulch and lining closets lol
