cedar posts in run???

Hi- I know cedar shavings are a big no-no and are toxic to chickens, but does just plain cedar wood do the same thing? We are getting ready to build our run and were considering using cedar posts.

Also, does cypress have the same effect as cedar?

Cedar is a good type of wood to use. Its very rot resistant. There isn't really any scientific proof that cedar is that harmful. There were some tests in lab animals in the 70s but I haven't read anything convincing. I still don't use the shavings just in case. Using wood out in the well ventilated run certainly wouldn't have any ill effects. Cyprus is even better if you have access to it... that stuff never rots.

We have been using ceder posts for the run for years, no sigh of trouble yet.

They'll be perfectly fine.

Your cedar posts will be outdoors, with plenty air circulation, far from the chickens' faces, and with less surface area than shavings. No problem. Cedar posts are a good thing. Better than pressure treated, for sure!

I agree, the only problem with cedar chips is that they are often used in places where we don't want drafts and the aroma can build up and damage the mucus layer in the lungs of the birds. Use them as posts no problem.
