Hi yall. Hope you had a great thanksgiving. Is it safe for my chickens/ducks/geese to have cedar sawdust in there pens? Thank you.

My husband can buy cedar sawdust by the truck load. We wanted to make sure was safe before he did. I will tell him not to. We will just have to keep using hay. Thank you.

I would discourage the use of cedar shavings. Could cause respiratory and/or digestive distress.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

X3 The oils that are in cedar can be toxic to birds and should not be used.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Glad you joined us!

I agree with the other posters--cedar is not a safe bedding for chickens (and many other small animals, for that matter).

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Thanks; I did have a great Thanksgiving and hope you did as well. As the other members have said, definitely do not use cedar shavings as they are toxic to chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens do you have?

We're glad to have you.

I wouldn't use cedar. It can be dangerous for chickens and other small animals.
