Are cedar shavings safe to use as bedding in coops? I can't use them to deep bed my equine, but would like to use them in my coop. I think the smell and natural insect control would be worth the extra cost

Nope. The fumes from cedar can have a toxic affect on chickens. Other wood shavings work well as does good old straw.

Crud! I was hoping that wouldn't be the case

Well, there are some that claim otherwise.

Like HERE.

And your chickens will be the best darn insect eaters, so no worries there.

I agree - I have been using it in my dog beds and I had two vets that told me that studies have shown that dogs don't like the smell of cedar!!! BUMMER!

You can put down PDZ, used in horse stalls. A lot of people use it in their coops & on the poop boards. I plan on buying a big bag & use in the poop board & sprinkle it in my coop on top of my pine shavings. (I have horses, too
