My husband started building our first coop today. He like most guys doesn't want to much input once he gets started with an idea. The coop measures 6'wx4'dx3'h. My husband also likes to over build things in my opinion. If 10 screws are enough 20 is better to him. So he put a 2x4 column in the center of the coop for "support". My question is, will this column cause problems for the girls say when they jump down from their roosts or just moving about inside the coop? I have 3 buff brahmas by the way.

At 6' x 4', the coop has 24 square feet of floor space, which is more than enough for 3 hens, so there should be ample room for them to move around. And if the coop is only 3 feet high, the roost pole shouldn't be more than 18" or so from the floor, so the chickens don't have far to jump down. It depends on the layout, of course, but I don't see a problem with a support in the center, even if it's not needed.

Some pics would help.

Oh good! Thanks for the reply. I've never had chickens before and wasn't sure if it would cause a problem. It's not finished enough for pics just yet.

Did I mention he over builds everything? Our run will be hurricane safe. LOL Does anyone think the chickens might get hurt on all these braces?
