Hello. I live in Riverbank, a small town in Central California. I have a decent size back yard and am interested in building my own chicken coop to keep my own chickens. I was wondering if anyone here can point me in the right direction as for what to look out for to do this properly. I am also not sure about any restrictions or regulations for this in my area. I know some neighbors in this area do have chickens and roosters as I hear them nearby and some of their coops are visible from the street. If anyone here lives in Stanislaus County and has any info on this I'd much appreciate it. Thank you everyone.

Depending on who has jurisdiction in your area as far as zoning, that's where you need to look, i.e. are you unincorporated county? In a city? Do you have an HOA or other similar board? Other than overall legality of poultry you'll also need to find out if there's any set back restrictions, restrictions on coop size, restrictions on roosters, etc. Don't assume that just because a neighbor has chickens that they're legal - what I can have differs a lot from what someone just a few houses away can have.
