Has anybody ever used Chaffhaye? Is it good for a 23 yr old horse and 3 goats? What exactly is it?

What I call hay chaff is simply the "dust" or small seeds and leaves of hay that settles at the bottom of the hay loft. It's the debris that baled hay leaves behind. Yes, you can feed it when you get it, but it usually is a small amount from the bale you have, so unlikely for an entire meal.

I think the OP is referring to this product: www.chaffhaye.com which is actually chopped, fortified and bagged hay.

I haven't used that exact product, but I have tried other chopped/bagged hay products. None of my horses would ever eat them.

They are a good alternative for some situations. Being chopped means they are easier to eat for some older horses with poor teeth. You do need to be careful, though, that the horse doesn't choke on the chopped hay. When in doubt, with a poor toothed horse, soaking the hay is a safe alternative.

You can use the product in place of regular hay, but it is pretty darn pricey compared to traditional bales.

Chaffhaye is actually fresh cut prime alfalfa mixed with natural probiotics sealed in an air tight bag (so its slightly moist not dusty). All natural, non GMS, beetle & weed seed free w/ no preservatives. Its as close as you can come to grazing your animals on an alfalfa field.

I've tried it on my hard keeping senior horses & WOW! They love it & are looking & acting like 2yo. I've had to cut back on feed & am saving $$. With 16 head I have to pinch pennies, while keeping everyone in shape. I've shipped in alfalfa for yrs & the waste, damage (due to storing etc) & varying quality of cuts this has been way far the cheaper way to go. Plus the feed value of chaffhaye is higher than the best cuts ever I've gotten.
