Anyone know what the percentage is that the Americana pullet from the feed store is actually a rooster?
We bought a new Americana chick and a Cayuga duckling 2.5 weeks ago from Coastal Farm and Garden here in Portland.
George the duck is my spoiled brat and Spirit the chick is hubbys.

We saw them on a Sat. and bought them on Sun. so they were a couple days old then.... estimate that they are 3 weeks old today. Just decided to use Wed. as our marker for age since they had been there for a couple of days and shipping overnight meant that they probably were hatched on Tues or Wed and then shipped. Not that it matters!LOL

We have had a friend raise our chicks in the past but this year we decided to venture into it ourselves. Now hang on for questions as we visited the chicks before but didnt see the day to day changes.

So, Spirit the Americana chick was listed as a pullet. YEAH!
Well, at 3 weeks old she has feathered wings, VERY long legs and a decent little peacomb started.
We are getting concerned that this early onset of the comb and the long legs means she may be a roo..... hope not.

So, what is the percentage of factory sexed chicks that end up being the wrong sex?

90% But since it is from a hatchery she is most likely an Easter Egger and not a pure Ameracuana. Post some pictures and that would help.

We know that part, that she is an EE probably which is fine with us. That is what 2 of our others are for sure and we think Baza is as well but we adopted her old.
I will attempt to get pics of her!LOL
Ok, you know how hard it is to take pics of the chick when George the camera hog duck wants to pose for his Mom!!!

Well, I have been threatening that George my spoiled rotten duck will become a houseduck, wear a duck diaper and go everywhere with me. FYI, George is a girl per the rather invasive vent check we did a few days after we got him/her but I named George that after the Looney Tunes part with the Abominable Snowman and Daffy duck where he will love it and hug it and kiss it and name him George.

Anyways.... hubby has been how can we do that Spirit is bonded to George, they are friends and she would go live out in the chicken pen with the other chickens and George would get to stay inside.....

So.... if Spirit is a roo.... that would at least solve that issue.....

Feel bad for Hubby, since it is his chick but.........

Guess time will tell. We had this last year. Friend raised 3 BCM, 2 for us and 1 for himself. Our 2 turned out to be roos.

He exchanged them with farmer for 2 more chicks and 1 ended up being roo and 1 pullet. No roos allowed in city limits in Portland. He was GORGEOUS and had best personality. We rehomed him out to a farm in the country but it still sucked. So 3 out of 4 ended up being roos last year.

I would say pullet or to early to tell with EE"s it is sometimes hard to sex at this age the hatchery usually vent sex so I would say if she was sold as a pullet then you are pretty safe betting you will get some eggs from her. both her and the duck seem really happy.

Thanks!
They are spoiled rotten!
Upgrades to a larger container this weekend as apparently with all the love, George is growing like a weed. Hubby is convinced that George is a goose not a duck because he has grown SO much.
They started in a 20g. long aquarium and we thought it would last 2+ weeks. NOT It lasted a week. Then we bought a jumbo clear tote, hubby cut out lid and made a mesh top, sealed the edges with nice wood, etc.. George should have been out of it last weekend because he/she can stand with the lid off and peer over the side. So, this weekend we are taking a wire dog crate and covering the sides with hardware cloth and plexi so it is cat and dog proof and they will move to that for what I hope is the last move until they can go outside.

George gets a bath every other day in the tub. Spirit gets a wipedown because George gets her a bit messy. They are both out every night sitting on our laps watching TV.
