When one of our hens died we decided not to replace her, our remaining hen seemed quite happy at first but then seemed so lonely. We managed to get a young hen and after the initial bit of pecking the old hen really became a “mother”. She let the little one eat first watched over her etc, now however the older hen appears to be getting ready to lay and her behaviour toward the young one has changed. She chases her at times and dominates the feeding trough. Help!

How old is this bird?
They can get cranky when coming into, or back into, lay...high hormone levels.
Dimensions and pics of your coop and run might shed some light here.
Multiple feeders and waterers would help too.

Oh, and...Welcome to BYC! @Sonia Mary
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, and then it's always there!

Thankyou, our older hen is about 4 and they have the full run of our large garden so only use the coop at night. I have just started separate feeding stations so hope things will settle down.
