and the girls seem to hate them. They are now laying in on the ground. I'm guessing I should just switch back to hay? or will they adjust?

What if you transition slowly? Go back to hay, then mix in 1/4 shavings the next time you change them, then half and half, etc?

I like shavings. My girls started with shavings, but while I had ducks, I used straw in their nests, and I think they much prefered that... They'll adjust. Might want to add an inch or two to the lip of the nest box.

I use timothy hay and shavings for my hens' nest boxes'. The hay/straw gives them some security and the shavings are comfortable (for chickens, that is).

I had a similar issue when switching from shavings to straw.... My hens went to laying on the coop floor :( I did what other suggested and mixed the two in the boxes for a while. With each cleaning I just added less of the phase out material ( for me it was shavings). Now they lay in the boxes just fine..

ok. I'll add straw back to the boxes and just slowly start to take some out and see how that works. Thanks!!
