I have a small flock of 24 free range hens. Last spring I introduced a Gold Laced Wyndotte Rooster with great success. Several hens were successful in reproducing new chickens. The roosters were butchered. Is it OK for the hens to reproduce with the same rooster or should I get another to discourage "inbreeding". I really like the rooster I have, is it possible to keep 2 roosters.I know the ratio is supposed to be 8-10 hens per rooster. Thanks! Deborah Pilukaitis
i don't see anything wrong with it... the inbreeding starts showing a couple of generations down... like 6-7 generations in... so you shouldn't be worried...
You can keep the same roo for a few generations at least. I plan on doing the same and changing roosters out every four to five years. Course, I also bring in a few new chicks each year, cause some other breed catches my eye!
