Changing food, advice needed

We are changing from a starter feed to layer feed. Do I need to mix some starter in the layer so it makes for easier transition for the hens? Could it upset digestion?

Also, do I really need to include grit if they have a large outside area to peck at sand/dirt?

The digestion isnt a problem it is the same stuff just in a different balance of ingredients. Yes mix some starter in with it. I had a batch of chicks that refused to eat the layer pellets.
