I clean and refill my waterers every day or every other day. They are only the one gallon size, and I keep that smaller size just so I have to clean them out frequently. As someone else posted, if it looks yucky and I wouldn't drink it, then it should be changed.
Also with the smaller waterers, the water gets warm in these hot summer days, so refilling in the afternoon with cold water is a treat for the gals.
