I am thinking of trying to start a breeding program to create a Charcoal Blackshoulder Pied. I think this combination would make for a stunning bird. Obviously it would be a little difficult since the only hens I could use would have to be split to the charcoal. I have a basic understandiing of genetics but was wondering if anyone could assist here. I would probably start with a Charcoal blackshoulder male and Pied Blackshoulder hens. ANy help would be awesome or if anyone has a pic of this combination. Thank you

There is several breeders that has been working on this for several years including me. I am working on charcoal BS silver pieds and there is a good chance I might get some next year. I have a 09 hatch BS pied hen split to charcoal and silver pied and several blue hens split charcoal, BS and silver pied. The male is a charcoal BS white-eye maybe split pied depending on who his mother was. You can get some charcoal BS pieds with the breeding you are talking about but when working with the charcoal color using split hens because charcoal hen don't lay it is going to take several years.

I figured it is gonna take a while, I am trying to figure what would be my best group to start with. I am searching for breeders to obtain a good combination. Brad legg has some Charcoal Blackshoulders peacocks for sale, then it is just findin a good set of hens to breed with him. Thank you for your response.

I have a few extra 2008 charcoal peacocks, putting them with blackshoulder pied hens. Also have blue hens split charcoal and pied.

Will have 5 breeding pens set up with charcoals.

Deerman, do you have any extra Pied Blackshoulder hens available. I think those bred to a charcoal blackshoulder would give me a good headstart.

Not at this time, maybe after I get some chicks from them and the charcoal peacocks. I do have an extra charcocal peacock 2 yr old.

Depend on how many chicks i get, these chicks will be split to charcoal,BS, and pied.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I for one have never seen one in person so all I can say is I like what I see from the pictues. However I never read anything about them only living 7-10 years. I just thought it would make an interesting combination. I do agree that the hen thing should be worked on but who knows, maybe one of these color combinations will have some fix it gene that becomes intermingled and solves the issue. ( I think the uliimate would be a pure black peacock that has iridescence in it, what a sight that would be!!!)

Yep you have a right to your opinion, myself I sold all my Opal BS, to work with the charcoal.

Now I am working on the hen problem, there has been a spalding charcoal hen lay eggs. I have one pen set up with 50% spalding split charcoal ,will keep any charcoal hens ,to see if the higher % green will help.

Yes there is alot of problem with charcoal, and yes they only live about 10 years. My 2 yr old charcoal was with 3 hens split charcoal, about 80% fertile eggs.

So yes we need to work on all the problem with charcoal as we add new patterns. A charcaol white eye ,sure looks grand , lot better than a opal in my opinion.(darker)

I'm not a pea person, but from where I'm sitting, adding new blood, like pied for example, if it is from good stock, could only improve the problems that the bold print poster is upset about. I don't see why adding new blood, that also adds a new pattern is a problem. Pied is easy to get rid of. What's the problem?
