charcoal or wood ash

I have not read through every response so this may have been answered. I would never use ash from regular charcoal briquettes because of the binders and things added. What I would like to know, is I use Hardwood Lump Charcoal in my grills. Does anyone know if the ash from hardwood lump charcoal would be safe? Thanks for the feedback

Curious that anyone burns coal for heat anymore......is that common in your area?

A fair amount of folks burn coal here also.

I meant to say charcoal, I burn wood personally. I remember carrying 100lb sacks of coal when in the UK. Dirty stuff!

charcoal, as in the briquettes for a bbq. The ash from those is not safe b/c of the additives.

Ok very weird question..... what about cardboard? Burnt cardboard ash? Can it be used?

I burn cardboard and paper, and consider that ash to be safe. I will not burn plastic coated or "shiny" cardboard or sales fliers. I consider those to be unsafe, though I really don't have any science to back that up.

I would contact the manufacturer or seller of your HWLC and ask them if there are any additives before considering this product to be safe.

My birds LOVE stove ash. I can always tell when they've been eating it b/c there will be black poo everywhere!

Word to the wise: ALWAYS be sure your ash is stone cold before putting it in your yard or coop!

I have been putting wood ash from our firplace out in the coop in their "dust bath" box..they seem to love it..only wood is burned in our fireplace, so ive read that, that is safe for them.
