Chasing predators away

I was at the fair this weekend and talked with a girl in the poultry barn. She stated that she freeranges all her birds and has no problem with predators. And her property backs up on state forest, I asked her how she can pull that off and her response to me was I have geese and they make racket and keep the coons and foxes away. I'm like ok so maybe I should try that so I bought two full size geese. They are pretty cool and I hope they keep my predators away! Anyone else heard of this or have any luck with geese proctecting the flock?

I haven't heard of that, but I'm sure other people who own geese will speak up. Wild geese are mean though, so I wouldn't be surprised. I've seen males (ganders?) attack people in the parking lot of a business I used to work at.

But I wanted to say that every area has a different predator load and may have more than one type of predator over another type. So it just depends.

Knock on wood *knock knock*, my dogs grappling in the yard making a lot of noise seems to have controlled our predator problem. But some of our neighbors get all the raccoons, possums, and coyotes. And they can keep them

I only have to worry about the animals that live outside the area that my dogs have access to.

yea, we have geese too. and I think it does help!! we lost a chicken last night but, I think we closed the gate and she wasn't inside. All of our animals stay in the same pen at night, then free range during the day. I think she might have been trying to sit or lay. Going to get something to cover the top just in case of owls though! we'll see....

We have 10 geese in the pasture with our chickens and used to have a few standard sized ducks too. They are all rounded up into a small fenced in area at night with a shed. The only predator we have problems with is skunks. They have killed 4 of our ducks and a gosling this year.
