chciken acting strange.

one of my golden sexlinks just isnt acting like her self. she dosent seem very alert and she just laid an egg with out the shell. she was just standing by the gate and the egg came out no straining or anything. the white was clear and the yolk bright. she is eating and drinking. she had a little poo on her bottom and her back end felt soft and i couldn't feel an egg or anything in there. what should i do for her or is this nothing to worry about?

I'm no expert but it sounds like a nutrition issue.

Do you give your chickens oyster shells?

Sometimes they will lay an odd egg, like very small, soft shelled, or odd shaped, and it is just a "burp" in the machinery. But it can also be something you can work with. First thing that comes to mind is being sure she gets enough calcium to make good hard shells.

what all do you feed?
has she ever been wormed?
describe her droppings..color and consistency.

try making up this mix:

this is for 1 day..divided into 3 feeds for the day..give for 5 days along with regular layer feed as usual.

1 cooked chopped egg yolk
1/2 teaspoon honey or unsweetened applesauce
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
3-5 tablespoons softened or water cooked oatmeal.
enough layer feed to make the mix puffy, not soupy or gummy.


crushed oyster shell offered in a separate feeder can help.
treats of oatmeal and plain yogurt or buttermilk, cottage cheese, and dark leafy veggies, such as spinach also have calcium.
poultry vitamins once a week wouldn't hurt.
